“'Zalina' is the perfect introduction to the trio's vibrant, Balkan roots-based trip-hop. Such simplicity perfectly complements the aesthetic philosophies underlying 'Zalina' from start to finish.” - Pop Matters
“Balkan Taksim is something you can only describe as entrancing. Swaying synths pair with non-stop doumbek (or drum) patter, which create an almost disorienting aural space for the listener.” - 'Zalina' is "Song of the Day" at KUTX 98.9
“Blend magically the sounds and rhythms of Balkans with psychedelic electronica in their new single.” - Songlines
Balkan Taksim
Balkan psych meets bass, breaks and synth electronica with a touch of groove.
Balkan Taksim are a band known for raising a groovy-balkan storm with their intoxicating blend of sharp contemporary electronic music with balkan psych sounds & vocals!
No banging overrated techno spiced up with darbuka samples here… no standard IDM music with balkan clichés: Balkan Taksim’s music is sincere and deep. It’s not a collage, not an appropriation, not even a “fusion”. It originates from encounters on equal terms between different Balkan cultures, traditional Balkan instruments, Carpathian ancient rhythms, timeless voices, psychedelic modes, contemporary musical technologies, futurist visions… and Romanian people.
’Zalina’, say Balkan Taksim, "is about a strong-minded, beautiful girl and a man who is desperately in love with her. Musically, the song epitomizes some of the directions we're pursuing, with its Romanian traditional vocals & keyboard stylings and laid-back yet dancefloor-oriented trip-hop electronics".
On ’Zalina’ the band is mixing the heat of popular music with the confident convulsions of trip-hop/ electronica sounds!
Imagine Massive Attack playing with the Taraf de Haïdouks! Tricky enjoying a stay in the Balkans!
Balkan Taksim is the brainchild of Romanian multi-instrumentalist/ artist Sașa-Liviu Stoianovici. The project started by searching for something to link the sense of what has been with what will be. His exploration of traditional music of the Balkans, ancient Romanian music and slavic cultures led him to travel a lot through the region and work with local singers and musicians to record the traditional tunes he later reworked with contemporary electronica sounds, heavy bass and powerful beats.
Together with the mesmerizing Bucharest artists Alin Zăbrăuțeanu (a young and very talented producer and electronica artist) and Cosmo (a virtuoso darbuka and percussion player) the music they made is a dark, futuristic and trance-like Balkan-sound that will, without a doubt, conquer this Summer’s clubs and festivals around the world.
Their stylish electronic psychedelia and bass flow directly from their roots in Romania and the Balkans upstream to global dancefloors. A project that's constantly evolving, exploring rhythms and sounds from every corner of the Balkans gently fused with electronic beats and tribal basslines.
They blend the old with the new and the analog with the digital, thus creating their own unique sound and visuals.
